The Zune HD’s got (new) game

by pcchan on Nov.16, 2009, under Product spotlight, Video Gaming

Microsoft finally released some new games for the Zune HD and unlike the initial batch of games available at launch, these games look like they actually take advantage of the Nvidia Tegra graphics chip. I will talk about each of the new games with a short review below:

Zune HD selling like hotcakes!?

by pcchan on Sep.21, 2009, under Product spotlight

Yep that certainly seems to be the case.  Dell is showing a 6+weeks wait for 16GB and unknown wait for the 32GB, Amazon is showing 1-2 months for the 16GB and 1-3 weeks for the 32GB. It’s also backordered at Newegg and Bestbuy. Some people say Microsoft is borrowing from Nintendo’s playbook and short-supply on purpose but we’ll probably never know the truth. All I know is that there were still some at Fry’s a few days back so if anyone really wants one I’d check there ASAP. I’m just glad I got my 32GB on the first day.

First full day with the new Zune HD

by pcchan on Sep.17, 2009, under Product spotlight

I spent the whole day yesterday playing with my new Zune HD. So far the experience has been very positive. I only have a few minor issues that I’ll talk more about in the details below but before I talk about everything I did with the Zune HD I’d just like to mention some other Zune HD related stuff. The first item of interest comes from Microsoft’s own press release on the Zune HD where they mentioned some exciting apps and games coming down the pipe:  Twitter for Zune and Facebook for Zune, in addition to fun 3-D games such as “Project Gotham Racing: Ferrari Edition,” “Vans Sk8: Pool Service” and “Audiosurf(TM) Tilt.” You can read the full press release here.  The second thing I’ve noticed is that the Zune HD has been very well received in the 2 days since it’s launch, getting raving reviews everywhere, including a 4.5/5 star rating at Amazon out of 72 reviews. My third and final tidbit is that Apple and their paid PR/fanboys are really going out of their way to spread negative FUD about the Zune HD. This ultimately is a compliment to the Zune HD and Microsoft for making Apple and their fanboys feel threatened. :)

Zune HD Unboxing video

by pcchan on Sep.16, 2009, under Product spotlight

Here it is folks, the Zune HD just became available today (9/15) and I’m bringing you the unboxing video with only a few hours delay. I have the 32GB version which comes in the platinum color while the 16GB will come in black. Initial impressions are very positive. The device is definitely “sleek and sexy”, is lightweight but still feels very well made.

Finally get to see Nvidia’s Tegra in real life on the Zune HD

by pcchan on Sep.02, 2009, under Let's get technical

As I mentioned in a previous blog the Zune HD will be the first mass-market product to be using the long-awaited Tegra platform from Nvidia. The Tegra is suppose to revolutionize video and graphics on portable devices similar to how graphics chips from 3dfx (for those of you who are old enough) revolutionized PC graphics so many years ago. Specifically, the Zune HD will be using the Tegra APX 2600 which is an eight core SoC (SoC stands for system-on-chip and it just means that all the different functional components that make up the system like a CPU, video codec, USB IO, memory, etc. are all integrated into a single chip resulting in significant size reduction and power savings). The eight cores of the Tegra APX 2600 consist of 2 ARM11 CPU cores, HD video encoder, HD video decoder, Ultra-Low-Power GPU for 3D graphics, 2D unit, Imaging unit, and an audio unit. The ARM cores can run up to 600MHz but all 8 cores will be dynamically clocked to achieve maximum power savings.  According to Nvidia power consumption is less than 1Watt during 1080p video playback. It will be interesting to see if this translates to impressive battery-life numbers on the Zune HD.

Zune HD

by pcchan on Aug.30, 2009, under Product spotlight

So the Zune HD has just been officially annnounced. Looks like Microsoft really has a winner on their hands. It looks great, you can’t go wrong with the 3.3in 16:9 480×272 OLED multi-touch screen and HD radio. The 720p HD video out capability is cool also. By utilizing the Nvidia Tegra processor inside you can be sure that HD video and 3D gaming will be super smooth.  My biggest disappointment has to be the included web browser with no Adobe Flash support and the lack of a PDF reader. Of course even with it’s superior specs I do not expect the Zune HD to be an “iPod killer”. Let’s face it, what the success of Apple (a company who has the gall to advertise the ability to copy-and-paste as some sort of breakthrough “feature” on their new iPhone 3G S) has taught us is that fanaticism and in-your-face marketing will trump over real features and innovation…..at least in the US.
