My E3 2010 Report on the big 3

by pcchan on Jun.20, 2010, under Trade Shows, Video Gaming

Many people may well remember E3 2010 as the beginning of the end for the Xbox 360 platform. Other than die hard Xbox fanboys most gamers were disappointed with what Microsoft presented. As I mentioned previously “Kinect” was a big disaster but even aside from that there was nothing all that exciting in the exclusive contents/features department. Sure there’s the next installment of Halo, Gears of War, and Forza which were all good but just more of the same. The gamers who enjoyed the current version of these franchises will no doubt buy and enjoy the next versions but these games does not make the Xbox 360 a compelling platform for anyone else. Maybe Microsoft was hoping that “Kinect” will fill the void there but sadly I don’t think it’s up to the task. Obviously “Kinect” does not offer anything for the serious gamers for reasons I’ve already discussed previously but even for the casual or non gamers (which by definition probably don’t already own an Xbox) I see no reason why they would buy the Xbox instead of a Wii based on “Kinect”. I understand that after losing so much money year after year on the Xbox (probably has to do with all the money MS had to spend to “convince” developers to develop on it’s platform) MS is desperately trying to get a piece of Nintendo’s money-printing formula by going after casual gamers. Unfortunately I don’t think they’ll get anywhere in that market while they alienate their core fan-base of serious gamers.
