iPhone sales in China

by pcchan on Nov.06, 2009, under Product spotlight

Back in September I wrote a blog analyzing the official introduction of the iPhone in China. I basically predicted that the iPhone will not do that well in China. The sales numbers just released by China Unicom seem to support my prediction.

Official iPhone pricing in China

by pcchan on Sep.30, 2009, under Product spotlight

As a follow-up to my previous blog on iPhone in China, China Unicom just announced their official pricing information for the iPhone. The iPhone itself will sell for around $735 (ouch!) with 3G calling plans ranging from $18 to $130 per month. By comparison other 3G users in China pay an average of $14 a month right now with non-iPhone plans. Like I said before the iPhone will not be price competitive with other comparable phones and calling plans but I’m sure they’ll still have a niche market as a status symbol.

Apple iPhone, China, and the Meizu M8

by pcchan on Sep.18, 2009, under Product spotlight

For the people who are interested in the business side of Apple, the prospect of Apple’s imminent official iPhone launch in China is very exciting. While here in the US the iPhone seems like the second coming of Jesus most people don’t realize that iPhones don’t necessarily do that well internationally. In Europe iPhone popularity is growing slowly because they don’t like carrier lock-ins. In Japan things are even worse because the iPhones are generations behind the Japanese phones in terms of features and usability. Softbank, the iPhone carrier in Japan, literally have to give the iPhone away for free with contract to try and drum up demand. Of course the iPhone will always have a certain niche market abroad just as American jeans and American cars do simply due to the whole “foreign import chic” status thing and that, in the end, maybe the iPhone’s biggest draw in China.

HTC Hero coming to Sprint

by pcchan on Sep.06, 2009, under Product spotlight

So it has now been confirmed that the latest and greatest Android phone the HTC Hero will finally be coming to the US under Sprint instead of AT&T. It will be available on October 11th for $179 w/2 year contract. The Sprint version has slight cosmetic changes compared with the standard HTC version (not sure why it’s always 10:08 in Heroland).

Life with the SE Xperia X1

by pcchan on Sep.03, 2009, under Product spotlight, Xperia

The announcement of the Xperia X2 from Sony Ericsson yesterday reminded me that I’ve been using the Xperia X1 for almost a year now. I was one of the very first people to get their hands on the Xperia X1a which is the North American version of the X1, the rest of the world has the X1i model. November 24th, 2008 was the date that the X1a was available for purchase in stores and shipped out to people who pre-ordered. While the people who pre-ordered still had to wait for delivery I just went into a Sony Style store on the 24th and bought it.  In the 9 months that I’ve been using the phone everyday it’s held up very well due to it’s all metal construction (except for the small endcaps on the back which are plastic for signal reception reasons). Other than some scuff marks on the metal battery cover plate the phone looks virtually new, and I don’t even use any sort of protective cover or case.

Apple Farm pt.2

by pcchan on Aug.31, 2009, under Tech company misbehaving

Man there is just no end to Apple’s tyranny as iPhone users are once again slapped in the face when Apple forced the developer of the iStat app to remove a very useful “Free Memory” function from their app (from the iStat site): (continue reading…)

Apple Farm pt.1

by pcchan on Aug.30, 2009, under Tech company misbehaving

The company Apple and their legions of brainwashed fans never ceases to amaze me. However, in the whole Google Voice fiasco Apple may have gone too far and is now at risk of exposing their true nature to all their fans who were fooled up till now. This time Apple has gone downright Orwellian by blatantly rejecting the Google Voice app and then to say “we didn’t reject the app” with a straight face. Even if they change their mind now and accept the app it doesn’t change the fact that they initially rejected it.
