LG claims Optimus Android Tablet will be better than iPad

by pcchan on Aug.26, 2010, under Product spotlight

When it rains it pours. Suddenly everyone is tripping over themselves to announce their tablet products. A few days back LG created some major buzz by claiming that their upcoming Android tablet will be better than the iPad. This was declared by their VP of marketing Chang Ma to the wall street journal. Many in the press declared Chang Ma to be a marketing genius. Of course there’s always the possibility that he truly believes it and he’s simply stating his belief.

My take on the Apple iPad

by pcchan on May.29, 2010, under Products to avoid

Sometimes I feel like the lone voice of reason in a world gone mad, or maybe it’s the other way around. As the world goes ga-ga for the Apple iPad, I find it to be unimpressive to say the least. It may surprise some of my readers but I have nothing personal against Apple or their products, and I always keep an open mind when it comes to technology or gadgets. In fact I actually wanted to like the iPad. Hey who wouldn’t like a lighter and thinner device that can replace my big laptop or those “useless” netbooks as Steve Jobs calls them. On launch day I actually had an iPad to play with for a few days in my home. I was very excited as I held it for the first time but I was immediately surprised by the weight of it. Don’t get me wrong it feels very good in the hands and it is very well built . I’m also not saying that it’s heavy or that anyone would have problems lifting it. I’m just saying that it is not something you would comfortably hold in your hand for long periods of time like if you were using it as an ebook reader.  Unfortunately since the iPad is not very usable when it’s laying flat you would have to either get an angled stand or always sit in a sort of sit-up fetal position if you want to use the iPad without holding it.

It would seem that Apple is the only CE company with a product marketing group

by pcchan on Sep.28, 2009, under Uncategorized

Anyone who has been reading my blogs long enough would probably be surprised to see me write anything positive about Apple. The truth is that I have nothing personal against Apple or their products. Apple products just don’t have the features I want and their business conducts are just bad by any standard unless you own a ton of Apple stock or are one of those fanatical fanboys. I generally try to be objective in my analysis and stick to the facts so I have no problems giving credit to Apple’s product marketing group when credit is due. I think the one area where both fans and foes of Apple can agree on is that Apple is a very good marketing company. Heck they can probably sell hamburgers to vegans by calling them iBurgers. :) More importantly they seem to be the only one who understands that in order for a product to be popular you have to advertise it in all the major ad channels, especially TV. I’m not even talking about those ultra annoying FUD-filled “I’m a Mac….I’m a PC” ads. When the iPod music player first came out Apple used to run tons of ads on TV showing people dancing and listening to their iPods. When the first iPhones came out they once again bombarded us with TV commercials showing the new device and GUI in all it’s glory. They even advertised the hell out of the fact that they finally added cut-and-paste and video recording capabilities to the iPhone 3GS as if it’s some sort of revolutionary breakthrough. Say what you will about those TV ads but they worked and the average person who don’t read gadget blogs, computer magazines, or watch G4TV suddenly all wanted an iPod or iPhone.

Apple Farm pt.2

by pcchan on Aug.31, 2009, under Tech company misbehaving

Man there is just no end to Apple’s tyranny as iPhone users are once again slapped in the face when Apple forced the developer of the iStat app to remove a very useful “Free Memory” function from their app (from the iStat site): (continue reading…)

Apple Farm pt.1

by pcchan on Aug.30, 2009, under Tech company misbehaving

The company Apple and their legions of brainwashed fans never ceases to amaze me. However, in the whole Google Voice fiasco Apple may have gone too far and is now at risk of exposing their true nature to all their fans who were fooled up till now. This time Apple has gone downright Orwellian by blatantly rejecting the Google Voice app and then to say “we didn’t reject the app” with a straight face. Even if they change their mind now and accept the app it doesn’t change the fact that they initially rejected it.
