by pcchan on Aug.31, 2010, under Tips and How-Tos

As I mentioned yesterday I will start off my whole-house media system implementation guide with the server. It is the most important component of the whole system and the only piece that requires some technical expertise. Read on for everything you need to know.

Battle of the living room: Unified set-top device gaining attention with possible new Apple TV

by pcchan on Aug.29, 2010, under Product spotlight, Tips and How-Tos

On the front page of the San Jose Mercury News yesterday the main article was about how everyone is trying to come up with the fully integrated set-top box for your TV and the possible new Apple TV (maybe call iTV?) announcement this coming Wednesday in San Francisco. The article mentions some of the complexities and challenges in coming up with such a unified device but fails to mention that such a system already exists, even with whole house distribution.

Hands on video of the Samsung Galaxy Tablet from DigitalTimes S. Korea

by pcchan on Aug.27, 2010, under Product spotlight

More video of the upcoming Samsung Galaxy Tablet running Froyo (Android 2.2), this time from an outfit in South Korea. Most of the text is in Korean but you can still see some good size comparisons, GUI response times, pinch zooming, watching live TV via DMB (not available in US), making phone calls, google maps, and web surfing:

LG claims Optimus Android Tablet will be better than iPad

by pcchan on Aug.26, 2010, under Product spotlight

When it rains it pours. Suddenly everyone is tripping over themselves to announce their tablet products. A few days back LG created some major buzz by claiming that their upcoming Android tablet will be better than the iPad. This was declared by their VP of marketing Chang Ma to the wall street journal. Many in the press declared Chang Ma to be a marketing genius. Of course there’s always the possibility that he truly believes it and he’s simply stating his belief.

Unified whole-house media system: A demostration

by pcchan on Aug.15, 2010, under Tips and How-Tos

Before jumping into the implementation details I think it would be good to see what the end result looks like. If a picture is worth a thousand words then a video is worth at least 10 thousand words. I made a video to show what I can do at my main TV in the family room using just a small inexpensive media center extender set-top box from Linksys talking to my media PC upstairs via wired or wireless ethernet:

Unified whole-house media system: An introduction

by pcchan on Aug.10, 2010, under Tips and How-Tos

Just as the unified field theory is the holy grail of science, the unified whole-house media system has been the dream of consumer electronics and computer companies as well as A/V enthusiasts. For many years now everyone has been trying to unite the home computer and disk server with the TV and DVR in the family room but most solutions just fall short. The main challenge is that there are just too many pieces to the puzzle:

In the high tech world 6 months is a very long time and it certainly seems that way for everyone who is waiting for a better alternative to the very limited Apple iPad.Various companies have announced or even shown slate products running some versions of either Windows 7 or Android for at least the last 6 months but still none of them have anything you can actually buy! Apple’s Magic Trackpad: Nothing new

by pcchan on Aug.03, 2010, under Product spotlight

I’m always annoyed by the majority of media outlets who treat every new product from Apple as if it’s some great new idea that no one has ever done before. In most cases (ie large touch-screen smartphone, touch-screen tablet, touchpad for desktop, etc) the idea or product has already been done by someone else  but the press conveniently forgets to mention them. Apple is just much better at packaging and marketing these ideas or products, with names like “retinal” display and “magic” trackpad which have no technical significance but sound impressive to the weak minded.

Flash gaming

by pcchan on Aug.01, 2010, under Product spotlight, Video Gaming

Sorry it’s been over a month since my last post. I’ve been busy learning how to create games using Adobe Flash. I now understand why Flash is the most widely used platform for videos, animation, and games on the web. The Flash development environment makes it very easy to create things that move, whether it be animated objects or video. The programming language used by Flash called Action Script is also fairly easy to learn. If anyone is interested I highly recommend starting with the book “Beginning Flash Game Programming For Dummies”. In my learning process I will be creating various games as practice and making them available for you to play here.  Please leave me feedback and suggestions so I can keep making better games.
